This contract is spread across age groups, and it is not uncommon to hear from a single 30-year-old man that his mother is totally or partially responsible for his wardrobe. While some men sometimes complain that they do not like shopping with their female partner and would prefer to go and have a beer, they neglect the fact that shopping may be a hard job, one that a woman is often doing for both of them or for the whole family.

The second contract is egalitarian, when the spouses share shopping obligations, but still prefer to communicate and have mutual responsibility:

Usually, I say to my husband that I have to buy a dress, and when he is near [a store], he will drop in and look around and then tell me whether there is something suitable, whether I should go there or not. [Then I go shopping] with him, certainly. Because I like to know how [the dress] looks, not only from the front, but also from the back.

(Elena, woman, 64, retired leading engineer, St. Petersburg)
